Beagles are energetic, active, alert and even tempered.
They are very social dogs and like the company of people and other dogs.
They do not like to be left alone for long periods and if so, will get into mischief.
Their soulful and pleading eyes will convince you to give them treats and table food which,
if you give in to them, will eventually lead to obesity, something that should be monitored
carefully because spinal problems are common in overweight beagles.
Beagles are good watchdogs only in the sense that they bark or bay/howl when anyone unfamiliar
approaches their domain. This vocal ability should be considered when adopting a beagle although
there are some that are more quiet than others.
A fenced yard is a requirement when adopting a beagle as they are
scent hounds with a very acute sense of smell. They can never be let off leash unless in a fenced area
as they will "follow their nose to the next zip code" before you realize that they are gone.
They are intelligent but independent (they will do what you ask them to do, when they want to do it.)
